The amazing Enos

Meeting with Enos from Leeuwarden in Netherland. At 39 years old Enos produces superb pieces with letters full of harmony and very dynamic.

What does mean your tag?
Nothing special, or maybe I don’t know, got the name from a coffee shop in my city where I hang a lot before I start writing, the shop was called “the zone”, always liked the name and letters so I played a little bit with them and Enoz was born hahaha, later I switched the Z into an S, a much cooler letter with more swing and flow.

Can you tell us how you start to write?
By seeing the pieces and tags in my city when I was a little kid, just wanted to do that too.

Why chose writing?
Because I love letters, and painting on a nice and sunny day with good friends.

Did you draw before start writing?
Yes as far back as I can remember.

How you can define your style?
As the classic New-York style with eye for detail and a good swing.

What is your inspiration for this style?
The New-York legends such as seen and always loved can 2 his work.

How we can define what is good letters?
With good connections swing and style.

Is one style typically of your city or country?
No, it’s a mix of style and anti-style.

Can you tell us how the writing comes to your city?
As far as I can remember it was always there.

How people and authorities see the writing in your city, and your country in general view?
Very very positive, we got a lot of halls of fame and several graffiti platforms, who do big murals in our city, so there is enough to find from street art to graffiti.

What is the connection you have with your city, your country?
Born and raised there, I love my city.

Do you have some anecdotes to tell us?
Oooh yes got one, going in the transition from male to female so Mister Enos will be Misses Enos in the future, and for all the haters fuck you.

Do you have a word for the end?
Thanks, Lady K for having me, and a huge shout out to my crewmates Demo, Swok and Pego, thanks for your love and support and the good times we had and will come. and a shout out to daddies Nasty sons, Edit, Ras, Mopz, and T-bag and all the writers in my city, peace.

Thanks too, and go to watch more painting of Enos on Instagram: Enos

Interview de Violent

In Europe we don’t really know what’s going on with Swan, except for those who have read Proust, the same goes for the Asian scene, but fortunately, Paris Tonkar is responding to go around the world writing and bringing back the best pieces. Today is a meeting with Violent from Kelantan in Malaysia.

Hi Violent, can you tell us how old are you?

What is your tag, what does mean your tag?
Violent it’s doesn’t mean anything it’s just my nickname since college and I used for my tag name.

Can you tell us how you start to write?
I think in 2006 video games Marc Ecko: Getting up, makes me want to try my own graffiti. I was started trying to make stencils, slaps stickers, wheat-paste poster after that I’m trying freehand graffiti in 2008 all of them started in Kuala Lumpur. In 2016 I’m back in my hometown in Kelantan till now. I still improving my skills.

Why chose writing?
Adrenaline, fun, and satisfying.

Did you draw before start writing?
Of course, but normally it’s just for guidance. When I’m in front wall everything changes… Sometimes random ideas more satisfying.

How you can define your style?
Semi-wild style sometimes basics lettering.

What is your inspiration for this style?
It comes in many ways sometimes randomly, sometimes from the internet, sometimes from old sketches.

How we can define what is good letters?
It depends, sometimes people said fonts structure, color combination, lettering flow, sometimes cleanest outlines.

Is one style typically of your city or country?
Graff artists have their own styles. We all try to be differently & I’m personally respect people who have their own original styles.

They are one typical style in your city, your country?
Not really, we only have less than 100 active graffiti artists half of them more to characters painting other half have their own styles & we all recognize their styles.

Who are the firsts writing in your city?
As long as I know in my hometown, first introduced graff is me but in Malaysia named Phobia & he owns 1st graffiti shop in here.

How people and authorities see the writing in your city, and your country in general view?
Better than previous years, because of the internet, and people love taking photos. Even now in some cities called Penang, street arts is one of the tourism attractions, and some locals make income from it. By selling postcards of street art artworks, printed t-shirt, etc. Some of the artists quit their job & be full-time graffiti artists. I think its good for all.

Can we think of writing as a form of democracy?
Maybe, if democracy means free to choose.

Do you think it is like one chromotherapy for the city where the dominant is grey?
The city without arts is made city too perfect, for me to be perfect is boring, a mistake is creative. I also like to quote words from one of the best graffiti artists named Jaba. He said “The city without graffiti is a city without a soul” -Jaba.

Do you have a word for the end?
Shoutout to my family members in Mediumtouch, and follow me at.

Thanks to Lady K / 156

Can you tell us since how long have you been doing photography?
I made my first attempts to start photographing back in 2011 when a cheap camera appeared at home that had a fixed focus and low resolution. Then, when I started climbing roofs, somewhere starting in the fall of 2014, quietly I began to take my Canon 600d camera from my father’s house. The first pictures were honestly so-so. It was possible to fully understand how to use the camera only six months later, shooting the dawn from the Kiev station, sitting on top of an old tower, next to metal eagles. I shoot on it to this day, having in its arsenal only a standard lens.

Why go especially on the roofs to take photos, what attracted you to this really special place?
From above, an unusual view opens up, not familiar, especially when the city is in a hilly area. There are many interesting places when the view from the five-story building is steeper than from the 20th story. But flat cities, especially old ones, on the contrary often have the same number of stories and therefore tall buildings can be seen from anywhere in the city. Angles are opened on certain tangential buildings through the urbanism of the city, which can never be found on the streets. In addition to the views – this is a kind of romance, an exciting process of finding points, penetration, and just the atmosphere of heights.

Did you study photography at school, or read books about photography?
Photography has always been a hobby for me. It was interesting to study everything from 0 on my own. At first, nothing worked, there was one successful shot out of 100, but with experience, productivity increased and today almost every shot turns out to be cool.

What are your influences, the photographers who hold your attention?
At first, it was just the Internet. You do not remember names or personalities, only some images, and proportions. When you begin to consciously approach photography, you don’t look at someone else, you think about where and what you don’t succeed in, that you don’t know how to train, you invent and implement it. Rather, you motivate yourself with your own work.

What inspires you?
Good people and events. There are people who at one time or another experience some kind of life situation with you, sometimes not the easiest, give advice or just do something together with you. And at such moments, ideas are born that are realized, involving these people, bringing them joy. If you shoot for yourself, then you would like to invite to the shootings and work not with a beautiful girl who is chasing fame, but with a friend who will be out of shape and not so beautiful, but she will be a good person.

Can you tell us how you got started?
It all started with the usual pampering with a cheap camera. Then it grew into shooting beautiful views from a height, as proof that you were able to climb one point or another in the city. Then it grew into a habit and lifestyle. And a little over a year ago, the idea came up to create the Pix.hunter project, and not just take photos, but also shoot a video about graffiti.

Will this pix hunter project ultimately deliver videos or books or exhibitions? Where can we and will we see your achievements?
The project is almost a year and a half and everything that has been created so far does not have the volumes and the quality, in my opinion, so that it would be possible to organize exhibitions in the near future and even more so to publish books. It seems to me that more implemented projects, ideas, and creativity are needed in order to move on to the next level. Everything that is created is laid out on many platforms, they are all interconnected. Videos on the YouTube and Vimeo platforms, photos on Instagram, and part on Pinterest. Maybe I finally have to create a site where all my work will be hosted.

What attracts you to photography, why choose this medium?
I like the process itself. A photograph, in my understanding, is not just a person who can make the necessary settings and press a button, and then align the horizon and colors in Photoshop. A photographer is a person who initially comes up with a concept and an idea for his work. Then he searches for the perfect place, time of day and angle. Next – it’s trying to catch exactly that frame that reflects his thoughts. I especially like looking for places and filming graffiti writers. You already know the person’s style in advance and create, in addition to atmospheric photos, an action video that can even convey the mood.

You favor in your subjects: writers in action, the city, and portraits, why this choice?
I like to shoot absolutely everything. Starting from studio shooting, landscapes, and the city, ending with the dangerous shooting of illegal objects and graffiti on trains, especially the metro.

Many people can’t understand why writers write on city without authorization, can you bring one explanation and say us why you find that very interesting, and why especially the metro?
Safety comes first. There are laws that criminalize graffiti, especially in the subway. Graffiti in the subway is different from graffiti on the street or transport. It’s not just come to draw a picture and run away, it’s come up with a whole plan, strategy, a bunch of checks, observations, and calculate your actions every minute. In the subway, the main thing is to climb in and draw, no matter what, the main thing is to do it. There are artists who don’t hide their identities, but I don’t like to depict myself anymore. Who cares who you are if the main thing is what you do?

What are you trying to capture in your photographs, what emotions do you want to bring out?
I try to reflect reality, not really changing anything. The atmosphere of the place, the weather, the time of day. I want it when the viewer saw the dawn – he could smell the dew and the warm rays of the sun after a cold night, if he watches the graffiti artist’s dangerous action on a wet night – cold, the smell of paint, and a little tension. In general, I experienced the very moment at which the photo was taken. Because almost all the work was photographed either in a dangerous situation, or a large amount of time and energy was spent to catch the moment.

Do you have any tips for making beautiful photos?
Everything should go on its own. No copying. If the works will be from the heart and with the love of their work – they will always be in demand. And it’s not a beautiful postcard shot of a popular place that can be found in almost anyone. You can photograph anything, even a stone, but if a soul is invested in this work, it will be more valuable than a beautiful picture.

Do you think this concept of soul is specific to a pictorial tradition which is part of the teachings of Kandinsky (see his book Concerning the Spiritual in Art) that we could more tend to find in Russia? I studied fine art and Pantheon-Sorbonne, and it seems to me that in Western Europe we are less attached to the spiritual part of art nowadays, although this concept is mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci in his treatise on painting, where precisely he advises caring for his soul to produce moving paintings?
It seems to me that any artist puts his soul into his works.

Do you have any plans?
Take pictures. Always come up with original ideas and implement them. If possible, help people. Do not stop there and try to grow and develop.

Thank you for this very interesting interview, do you want to add something?
I want to say that everyone who is trying to somehow realize their worth – do what they really want and don’t give up on their first failures, believe in themselves and go all the way.

If you had seen a rabbit, with a watch on its paw, running towards a burrow like a madman, would you have followed him? Alise, she rather went for bombs in the supermarket next door to secretly infiltrate depots and lay-ups in order to redecorate our beautiful railway system and make it even more beautiful. There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s Mastercard. We can’t thank Alise enough for all she has given to us.

Hello Alise, could you present yourself?
I’m half Russian half German and I live in France. I’m a Daydreamer and a Nightrider.

From a presentation of you we will only know that, or do you want to disclose how old you are, and since when you are in France, or at least since when have you been painting? And what are your favorite supports?
There is a saying in France. If you want to live a happy life, you have to live a secret life. I’m in France for 15 years now. I started painting around 1996 and I love all prohibited supports, trains, and walls.

How do you explain this love for the forbidden?
When you are a child, the prohibition becomes a very intense curiosity to know what is beyond the known. Teenager, you are looking for what is prohibited in a way to differentiate yourself from the ideals rooted in childhood. What is prohibited becomes more attractive. I have looked for everything that sets me apart to say that I am someone different and unique. From the story that was told about Adam and Eve in paradise, it seems that throughout human evolution, the taboo has always been very attractive. The mistake was to ban the apple. If they had banned the snake, would Adam have eaten the snake?

Can breaking the prohibition reveal that the law may be unsuitable to human needs?
When is it justified that I act as my own legislator and decide whether or not to obey the law? Wherever the law goes against freedom, it is inadequate. We live in a conformist era where governments have powers to numb the mind, and where the masses prefer to play it safe rather than raising questions of principle.

Peux-tu nous raconter comment tu as commencé ?

Can you tell us how you got started?
I started around 1996 after watching Style Wars. First I started tagging with a girlfriend every afternoon after school. I grew up in the Communist part. After the fall of the wall, everything was on hold. The closed factories were a great playground, the cops knew nothing about graffiti, our parents were concerned about themselves. One day friends showed me pictures of trains from Fancy in Warsaw. I thought if she can do it, #metoo! In the afternoon I went to a yard near my house. That was the beginning of the end.

On avait bien bu, l’équipe avait gagné.

Can you tell us what are your best memories?
In hindsight, it’s more about the people than the work created. In Germany, I hid in the yard on a train in the morning, the train started and I found myself at the first stop 350 km from the yard. Without money, at the time there were no smartphones. I hitchhiked in a car with soccer fans. It turned out that they had an entry ticket, they invited me to assist the game. I love football! I was drunk, the team had won. They gave me money to travel home. I fell asleep on the return train. I found myself again 1 km from a yard. 2 strikes in 24 hours. I met with the 3ACHEM crew a guy who slept with his eyes open. He came down from a mountain somewhere in Russia. I didn’t sleep at night watching this freaking guy sleeping with his eyes open. Still Russia, there was a guy with 3 nipples…

Are there any particular events, that have affected you?
I slashed my head under a train in Russia resulting in a 10 cm open wound. I was hiding and crawled under the train and there was a kind of iron bar hanging that I didn’t see in the dark. I felt the warm blood flowing on my body and I stepped out like Frankenstein in front of my friends. At the hospital they shaved half my head, I corrupted the nurse for having a doctor who was not drunk and who sewed my head. Tagging cows was also a special moment.

What are your preferred pieces and why? Do you have pictures of these paintings you may show us?
As you know, women are never satisfied. You start with a panel, you want more. You do an end-2-end, you want more. You do a whole car, you want more. I prefer trains and bombs. It doesn’t matter whether night or daytime. Why? I like to be the first and the first everywhere! Adrenaline, the immediate result of the action. For the photos, I grew up without the Internet or Instagram, documentation was done when we managed to steal films.

So you continue progressing, you will do a whole-train, pass to airplanes, you are in a quest to improve your artistic production?
Haha… Yes, I still have to keep some targets before retirement! Today I prefer to do something great and qualitative. I would like to paint a lighthouse or create a Kaercher type machine to take easily on the street which will be as powerful as a fire extinguisher.

I wish you. This tradition to steal which accompanies writing seems a condition for painting and progressing, otherwise, we cannot do it. Why not be creative with what you have?
If you can’t afford it, you need to start like this. When I started, there weren’t even any graffiti stores. We sprayed with car lacquer cans, we made our markers with wax. When you start working you start paying your six-pack and markers at 10 €. It’s a generational thing, the sixpack of the futures contract. The older ones pay for the young ones.

A little earlier, you were talking about a girlfriend with whom you started tagging, did you meet and make friends with a lot of female graffiti artists, or was it a rare species?
There weren’t many graffiti girls. It’s sometimes a bit complicated with girls when you go out at night with their boyfriend. They imagine a story and the poor guy has to explain himself the next day. For me, it’s like a brother for the girl I’m a competitor. When there were female artists, most followed their guy who was in graffiti and they disappeared as soon as the relationship was over.

For you, it might seem obvious, but perhaps putting yourself at her place, you need a good dose of confidence in your man to let him bomb by night with another girl?
Why automatically think if we are going to bomb at night something will happen? Do you sleep with each colleague you work with? I want to be respected for my graffiti, not for my ass. If I want to sleep there are thousands of other guys on earth.

And don’t you think that a relationship can seem flat with someone who does not paint, when we live with other people extraordinary moments, and also very creative, knowing that colors and shapes evoke emotions, how to be with someone who does not create emotions with art?
I don’t feel the need to live with a man who does graffiti or painting. I love a person for his personality, not for the art they create. The important thing, first of all, is not the emotional value felt (positive or negative), but the intensity of the motivation associated with it.

And in case he didn’t have a girlfriend, didn’t it get more complicated for you to go paint with him and an ambiguous relationship is created in the long run?
No, there is no ambiguity. In France especially, we confuse free woman and easy woman, the idea of ease implying an absence of resistance and control.

You’re talking about the girlfriends, but what about your boyfriend. Did he accept you to go out at night to go paint with other guys?
I live my life. I choose men who ruin my lipstick and not my mascara.

Graffiti is beautiful; like a brick in the face of a cop.

Thank you for this interview Alise and this advice beauty, do you have a word for the end?

Did you draw before?
Yeah, but I’m paint at the paper only, when I’m at high school.

What kind of drawing?
Before I make some face sketching, pattern but it’s long ago. And I don’t remember how I can do that. Hahahaha.

What you study?
I’m studying at Art school to learn basic colors, shapes, etc.

What is your job now?
I’m work at the graffiti shop since 2012, at Flame Graff Store, at Affandi Street No.18 Special Region Yogyakarta.

It’s a nice job for a writers

How did you find this job?
From Rune, because of he in the graffiti world. And I’m star work at his friend shop. When I’m quiet, we thought to start making this own graffiti shop, 3 years ago.

What are your influences?
I have so many influences until now there are have a big impact at my graffiti. Rime the first one, Semor is my inspiration for my piece. But actually so many influences for me because they have so many good pieces and I’m still learning.

They are many girls to paint in Indonesia?
Yes, so many girl paints in Indonesia. But in my city maybe just 3 that I know paint. The other in another city.

What are other girls, you have a name?
In my city, the name is Bonita, Wedya, Mems, Cloris that I remember and we have met a person.

You paint with other girls in your city?
No, because sometimes we don’t get perfect time to meet. Some of girl still at school and I have to work.

You make street, trains, walls?
For wall yes, for trains not in here. It’s difficult to paint trains, you can get arrested here.

What frequency you paint?
It depends on my works when I have a thing much to do, I’m not really much paint.

They are a big writing scene in Yogyarkarta? and in Indonesia?
Yeah so many in here. We have so many new writers here. And so many people paint every day. Every day we have a new writer. But in here we have Rune, Nick2, Dyeget, and Manu more.
